ALL IN ONE PAGE vol. 1
3/24/20
I am going to try something new. I like to write, and I write quite often. However, it bothers me that I have never really published anything. People don’t know that I write. Guess what, I do.
Starting with today… March 24, 2020, I will release a “Weekly Page”. I haven’t decided if it will specifically be a Tuesday thing, but it will appear sometime throughout each week. I will be sharing anecdotes and observations within my own life, as well as some level-headed commentary regarding current events and sports (when it returns). This is going to be a way to keep myself in tune with what is going on in the world as well as analyzing issues through logical and thoughtful thinking, both things that I see a major lack of on all social media platforms. … All In One Page.
All things considering, I will be talking a lot about the “quarantine” and about the Coronavirus in the coming weeks and potentially months. Speaking of, this Coronavirus thing is pretty insane, huh?
To be perfectly honest, I’m not exactly sure how to react to this virus. We have parts of the country in full lockdown, while in others we have people partying on the beach. It’s just a matter of time that other states will follow their lead, possibly leading to some sort of national lockdown. I personally believe that should be the protocol at this point. Considering we still have a shortage of tests and masks, combined with the fact that we do not have the medical resources or staffing to handle droves of people all getting sick at once, this is a no brainer to me. However, I do think that it should be a more strategic kind of lockdown. People who are statistically not at risk should just stay away from people who are statistically at risk from the Coronavirus. Have younger and healthier people keep their distance from people who have underlying conditions or older demographics. This would allow us to continue to have a lot of our workforce continue to work both from home as well as in person, as opposed to having a full on lockdown that would tank our entire economy.
While I remain having a positive outlook on this, I can’t help but feel that we are vastly unprepared and have been extremely slow in reacting to this virus. I am also positive that this will be around for longer than one may think, so I expect to be in lockdown longer than just a couple of weeks. According to a graph I saw from the New York Times this morning, the virus has caused 534 deaths in the U.S. and is doubling every 3 days. What happens when global cases surpass 1 million? (As of writing this we are at 416,817 globally) This is where it will get very interesting. The number of people who are critically ill or passed away at that point will give us a pretty good glimpse at how bad this really will turn out to be. I’d wager that a lot more are infected and not showing symptoms than we think.
All that being said, I have also taken some time to realize just how historical this virus really is. When else has entire sports leagues and major public and private events cancelled, as well as entire countries being put on lockdown other than in a Plague, Inc. game? The massive global health and economic impact that the Coronavirus has had is nothing short of remarkable. However, I am the type of person who looks at the whole thing, and then looks at the situation in relative terms from the perspective of all of humanity. Yes, there are a lot of people who will perish because of this, but there are people dying of things such as cancer and heart disease, both of which are bigger long term problems for the human race. I’m not downplaying the current severity of the Coronavirus, but I am saying we need to look at the whole picture. Perspective is a powerful thing.
Let me end with some even more positive news! Did you see the story of the 95 year old woman who became the oldest woman in Italy to recover from the Coronavirus? She kicked its ass!
When asked about her experience, she said:
“Yes. Yes, I’m fine… They are good people who looked after me well” …
My favorite answer ever.
