Commitment is an interesting thing to talk about, especially because I don’t hear people talking about it in today’s age. We sometimes forget what it means to truly commit and be all in, whether it is a relationship or a personal commitment to ourselves.
When I first think of the word “commitment”, I think about it either as something greater than just one person, or as something that is going to make one person greater. Both are things that involve improvement, focus, and are extremely intentional. You are intentionally making a choice to commit to something.
Think of the kind of things you can commit to: a marriage, a friendship, an organization, a country. These all involve more than one person. Any of these partnerships have something that, ideally, is something where both sides are committed fully and will want to work on and keep the relationship healthy and prosperous. To me, this is the external way to look at commitment. You are looking to make a commitment to or for something/someone that is outside of yourself. There is a certain amount of selflessness with a commitment of this kind.
The next thing I started to think about is when someone might make an internal commitment to themselves. Let’s say for example wanting to get in shape. You make a commitment to yourself that you will work out 5 days a week. There will be a certain amount of struggle in the process. There will be days where you do not want to, but you remember the commitment you made and what it stands for and that will keep you going.
I would say that overall, the stronger the cause and purpose for someone to commit to something, the stronger their feeling of commitment will actually be. If someone truly cares and has a want to, then they will be fully committed, fully “in”. However, there are times when one’s purpose and faith may waiver, and they might question their commitment and what it stands for.
You just have to keep the faith and keep going.
